Music Therapy
At Grass Roots, our music therapy service provides a gentle and creative space for children and adolescents’ holistic development. Music therapy supports people facing a wide range of neurodevelopmental, emotional, psychological, cognitive, physical and social challenges.
Through live music-making, instrumental play, singing, music listening, movement and other creative methods, our therapist works closely with each child to create a safe and supportive environment. Sessions are tailored to the child’s individual needs and goals, always at a pace that feels comfortable and empowering.
We believe in nurturing the whole child — helping them build confidence, regulate emotions, and connect with themselves and the world around them in new and meaningful ways.
Benefits of Music Therapy
Music therapy can be a powerful tool to help children:
- Understand, express and regulate their emotions in healthy, creative ways
- Improve social and communication skills; both verbal and non-verbal
- Build self-esteem and resilience
- Strengthen attention, concentration and self-regulation
- Support motor skills and coordination through movement, rhythm, and play
- Develop confidence, independence, and the ability to adapt to change
- Process grief, trauma, or difficult life experiences
- Develop healthy coping and manage anxiety
- Develop healthy attachments
- Foster imagination, curiosity, and creative thinking
Every session is designed to gently support the child’s development across emotional, cognitive, physical, and social areas — helping them flourish in their own time.
How Music Therapy Helps:
No two music therapy sessions are the same. Each one is guided by the child’s unique needs, interests, and energy on the day. Sessions may include listening to music, improvising with instruments, writing songs, movement, or drawing — all with the support of a trained therapist. Children do not need any particular musical interest or experience to participate – music is used as a form of connection and play, which makes this therapy accessible and fun.
The goal is not to “teach” music, but to use music as a medium for expression, communication, and growth. Whether a child is struggling with anxiety, needs help managing big emotions, or simply benefits from a calm and expressive outlet, music therapy offers a space where they can feel heard, supported, and understood.
At Grass Roots, we recognise that every child’s journey is different. Music therapy meets them where they are — and gently helps them grow.
